Can we see some black rats?

phiber_optikx Jan 31, 2006 03:19 AM

I am bored and in the mood for some black rat pics. Also anyone have pics of adult white sided everglades and white sided yellow rats?

here is my favorite little guy...

I remember seeing that picture before. I don't usually care much for the off colored black rats but I absolutely LOVE the slight grey in that one! Beautifull snake.

I have posted this one before. This is a snake from S.E. Virginia. A rescue snake. I have this one cooling and should have eggs by June.

Great looking snake. The jet black ones are my favorite and lucky for me that is what they look like around here.

Here's one from today of one of the Montgomery Co. babies I got from Scot Koontz this year. They're starting to get darker now.

This animal is from a locality in GA where the animals are as solid black as any I have seen, unfortunantly I don't have any full body shots of this snake. This snake was approx 24-26" long and already you had to really look hard to see the blotching. So far, all of the obsoleta from this area that I have found are like this (7 yearling-subadults/9 adults/MANY DORS) The adults are absolutly stunning. I will be making return trips to this area and will try to get better photos. It's difficult due to the fact you usually find them crossing roads at dusk, and getting a good shot is difficult (at least for me) since they are protected they cannot be collected for "next day" photography. The "log" is a prop I carry with me to photograph animals on. Enjoy.

Great Photo! Glad to hear that you let them stay in the wild.

The pictures I posted were of S. Eastern VA snakes (York Co.). They are just great looking snakes. Many years ago I found a solid brown colored female outside of Richmond VA. It was the only one I have ever seen with that coloring. How common is that morph? Does anyone know?

phiber_optikx Feb 04, 2006 01:27 AM

Hypo maybe...? Other than that maybe just a lightly colored snake.

A guy I used to know in VA found the mottled brown ones in the mountains (I think back then they reffered to them as brindle, although there has since been somthing else with that name in the hobby)some of these were almost solid chocolate brown, they were something to see! It's amazing to think of all the things that were found/seen in the wild back before the "morph awareness" happened. They used to just call them wierd or unique LOL they would be worth untold amounts now. There's a guy down in Middle GA that used to work with Ross Allen who has all these photo albums, you would have freaked to see some of the animals in those...and we just stumbled across his little store while out collecting one day. He had photos of TRUE 7.5' Eastern Diamondbacks and such. The whole mindset of people in the old days was different...I thought the Love's and R. Berry were going to write a book about the history of herpetoculture, that will be an incredible read if they ever finish it. Sorry I went off on a tangent, but the guys who I learned from in this hobby 20 years ago were a "diffrent breed" I don't think they get the respect they deserve sometimes.
