Where to find hognoses in and around Medina County Texas

reptoman Jan 31, 2006 07:55 AM

I have a friend that loves snakes and has been looking for a hognose for some time and has come up empty handed. while I am out looking for lizards I always keep my eyes open as well. Not sure of the best terrain or envirionment one might find these in? Are they found in the central south Texas area. Just not sure since I am into lizards more than snakes, thought I would ask one of you that probably has the experience out there?

Hogs (both Mexican and Eastern should be there) are snakes of arable soils. They are particularly common in sandy soils over other types.

For Mexicans, you might try looking in sandy grassland areas.
Sandy oak woodlands in other parts of central TX tend to have easterns, so I suspect the same would be true in Medina county.

As for finding them, they are most active in the morning in my experience. I find most of my hogs on roads in the mid-late morning in the late spring. Easterns will get under trash but Mexican Hogs don't appear to do that.

What he said! I have only found easterns in Goliad and Refugio county and on Padre Island here in Corpus. Found a Mex in west Texas last year in a prairie dog town.
