Some Q's about Pastels

johnavilla Jan 31, 2006 08:23 AM

Ok, so I want to buy a pastel soon but I've got some questions for those of you with experience.

1) I have heard that Bell line pastels hold their color the best out of the affordable pastel lines. Is this true from the experience of those of you that have them? Please do not tell me to get a Blond or a Lemmon, I can't afford that yet

2) I have also heard that breeding to a light colored normal is important but if color is random in normals (it is, right?) then isn't the normal aspect of color in pastels random too? Would that be why you can get ugly pastels and pretty pastels in the same clutch? If the color is important then what happens when the normal is dark but has tons of yellow flecking in the lower half of her sides?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Here are 2 adult Bell line Pastels that we have in our collection. One is very dark and the other is extremely bright. Neither of these were produced here.

With all of the bloodlines of Pastel Jungles you will see exceptional Pastels and some poor examples of the same bloodline. One major factor is what you are breeding your Pastel with! If you are breeding to normal ball pythons their appearance has a major effect on the Pastel offspring. We have found that breeding Pastels to simple recessive mutations produces some incredible Pastels Het for those mutations (Pastel Het Clown, Pastel Het Axanthic, Pastel Het Piebald and Pastel Het Genetic Stripe just to name a few).

With our bloodline we breed for a lot of dorsal blushing.

The reason we breed for this dorsal blushing is in the Super form all of the blushed areas are purple!

You can take an unattractive Pastel Jungle and produce exceptional Pastels but starting with an exceptional Pastel will save a lot of time.

Glad to see you are interested in pastels. Here is a pair from Graziani's line also. I think their are darker and lighter ones in every pastel line just look at the individual snake and get it because you like it not for the name. Have fun!

I would say go to a show and look over all the Pastels, without looking at the lineage. Pick out the best one, and then see what line it is. Remember, in most Pastels, the yellow stays yellow and the orange turns brown, so keep that in mind when searching for your snake. These are VPI and Sutherland line, can you tell which is which?
