Wants Out

bearded_dragons_ Jan 31, 2006 01:22 PM

I take my beardie out of his cage all the time and he is probably out more often than he's in. He loves to sit on the window sil and will look outside for hours. But whenever I put him back in he runs back and forth rubbing his nose on the glass cause he wants out. I don;t think its cause his cage is to small(its a 40 gal)or anything, because half the time when i take him out hell just sit there and is just happy to be out, but im worried hes going to get a sore on his nose from rubbing.
Any suggestions would help Thanks.

How old is your beardie? Is the cage a regular 40 gallon or a breeder? What is the heating, lighting, substrate, tank set up, etc. I wouldnt take him out as often, I would think taking him out for hours is no good, since he should be getting a 105-110 degree basking spot, which Im sure hes not getting on the window sill, and uvb, which is the window is closed, Im not sure but I dont think the UVB rays travel through glass. I would try and get him used to his cage, and just take him out for 20 minutes a few times a day tops.

My beardie is a 3 year old male, and his tank is a reptile one so its not as high as regular fish tanks (I dont know if thats a breeder tank or not) He's got all the right lighting and heat, with the heat lamp, under tank heater and the UV lamp.(Gets to appr. 105 degrees) I use sand as his substrate. The Window sil can get pretty warm depending on how sunny it is, also when it's not as sunny out I keep him warm on one of those magic bags (never hot, just warm). I actually do take him outside on occasion, never for to long. Its just when I put him back in his cage he will sit in there for a while and then start rubbing his nose on the glass so i"ll take him out because he wants out. Its hard to leave him in there when he wants out, he's just to cute to say no to.

Even when he's on the window sil he will rub his nose on the window trying to get outside.

It sounds to me like you have got everything right, and the only thing wrong is that you have a spoiled Beardie!
Honestly, he probably only even does all that when your in the room to see it, and he thinks he can get you to give him attention. I could be wrong about thism because I am not a beardie psychologist, But really, doesn't it feel sometimes like we are our pets, pets, more than they are ours?
The only other thing that could possibly be wrong that comes to my mind is that he is not getting enough UVB. Maybe he wants outside because he knows the sun will give him what he needs. Like I said, if its not the UVB, he is just spoiled

Your definitly right about them being the ones in control. He does seem to be just sitting there until I come into the room...,but i'll change his Uv light just incase. Thanks for your help
