scale count - maybe a dumb question but...

aka2212 Jan 31, 2006 02:54 PM

Now this might sound a little silly, sinc ei have been keeping snakes for quite a long time, but can anyone help me finding some litterature on how and where to make scale counts?

I do know you have to count the scales *G*

Thanks
Jakob

Doesn't the front and back inside cover of the Peterson field guide have a scale counting reference photo? It used to.

Why do you have to count scales anyway?

It is a good thing to know if you someday should get yours hand on a speciemen you are having a hard time ID. Like a friend of mine had with a Psammophis and the recent post in the Elapid forum about ID a Naja sp

Hi Jakob –

I don't know how accurate it is, but check out this site: Scale Counts by Genus

Especially, look at the pages, Head Scales and
How to Count Body Scales

Are you in Denmark? There’s some information on scale names and counting in Reptiles and Amphibians of Europe by E. Nicholas Arnold and Denys Ovenden.
