Anybody from bay area go herping on or around Mt. Tam?

jwilson Jan 31, 2006 07:23 PM

I've moved up here fairly recently from san diego and looking to check out the local herps. All i've found so far are garter snakes in Pacifica. Mount Tam looks pretty promising. Any advice or obversations would be appreciated. thanks

Stick to the southern- and eastern- facing slopes and flip rocks in sunny/rocky areas. But please BE SURE to stay on stable slopes and put back whatever you flip. People are rendering viable habitat unusable by not returning stuff to its original position or by flipping on too-steep hillsdes. The extra work is worth it in the long run.

If you want amphibs, they're up in profusion now.

You'll find everything from garters to zonata, and alligator lizards to whiptails, if you're patient. Ringnecks are up already in the South Bay and probably on the lower slopes of Mt. Tam as well. Last year I flipped a boa and a racer in the first week of March (in Santa Clara County), and after that it was all good through June.

Weather prognostications are for a drier and warmer spring than last year so the active season may not be as long this time around.
