If a deal is possibly going awry...how long do you wait?

Christy Talbert Jan 31, 2006 07:54 PM

Hi everyone,

I'm curious how long you all would wait before going public in a situation where the animal you paid a small fortune arrived and was not what was described to you before the sale? (maybe it was mis-sexed, not the right size, or in poor condition, etc.)

I'm in that situation now - the guy seemed willing to make it right, but it's been four day since I have heard from him and I'm starting to get concerned.

Thanks, Christy

Depends on what went wrong. As long as there is good communication and you are moving forward, no need to make anything public. No need to be upset at this point. If communications break down, no progress, excuses not action, then it's time for you to take action.
Just my opinion.
As a seller, I avoid these types of problems with current photos, current weight, and honest representation of my stock. If I ever have a complaint, my policy is to rectify the issue ASAP.

I bought an animal that was "I thought", the one pictured...but turned out not to be. Large, well known dealer. I should have done something, but didn't. Now all I can do is tell everyone I meet not to buy from them.

...if you were to drop the hammer on some unscrupulous business transaction, the perpetrator might as well close up shop and find a new hobby.

I would give it 24hrs...if they have ANY brains they will make it right.

It would really depend on who it is. If it is known reputable person/business than I would wait a least a week. Make sure you call and email, lots. I know from personal experience that I have been less than punctual on some responses but have never intended to rip someone off. In my case, I do this as a hobby and family and work come first. It may not be the best business tactic but it is how I approach it.

The best course would be to search the Fauna Classifieds BOI. If he has no dirt on him from there you likely will be OK in the long run. If he has already ripped off a lot of people, you proably will have to consider this an expensive learning experience.
