I enjoy mine a lot. They are some of my favorite snakes. Inevitably, they go on about a 3-4 month fast in the winter but they do fine. I keep them at room temp with just a "squirt" of heat in the afternoon. I have a heating pad with a built-in shut off switch. I turn it to medium in the afternoon and let it shut off on its own. GThis isn't the perfect shot but it shows the two color variations of my snakes. One has a much bluer under tone than the other.

Can you give me detailed information on these? Thanks for your help.

but I'm not sure I'll hit all of your questions. I assume you are asking about husbandry. Ask specifically about anything I miss.

Rememeber, this is just my techniques. Others will undoubtedly disagree with various aspects.

I keep my pair in the same cage year round. As you can see in the pic, I make sure they have a climbing opportunity although they don't use it a lot. They are diurnal. I keep them at room temp 70-72 degrees with only a small shot of heat in the afternoon. (The heating pad set at medium shuts off after about 20 minutes.) Mine tend to prefer a little smaller prey than my Obsoleta. I feed the adults one adult mouse a week. Japanese Rats are notorious for going on yearly hunger strikes. Mine usually stop eating about early Oct and start up again in early Feb. I don't try to cool them during this period and they don't lose much weight at all. They are less docile than Obsoleta but are not difficult to handle. They have never snapped at me but the younger ones can be pretty flighty when you try to hold them.

This is a species where I heartily recommend buying from a repsected breeder. The colors of many snakes I see advertised by Pet Shops tend to be pretty bland. What else can I/we tell you?
Thanks for the compliment uf_g8or. I've always been happy with their coloring.

That answered everything wonderfully. I am not sure I will be getting into these because of the hunger strike issues. I don't like the thought of it. How are the tiawans and the trinkets in comparisson? I love the look and the size of them but are they nippy or hard to care for? Thanks again for all of the information.

Those are absolutely gorgeous!!!

If you don't mind me asking...where did you acquire those? I've had a hard time finding anyone who works with and breeds this species. They are truly one of my favorite Asian ratsnake species.

Thanks for sharing!

By the way phiber_optikx...here's a couple of links for you
www.ratsnakes.com/Eclimacophora.html
www.elaphe.it/albinism_elapheclimacophora.htm

Not that much info seems to be out there on them even though they are one of the more spectacular of the ratsnakes.

Hope that helps!

Hello--
I keep 1.3 climacs, and love them! Don't be put off by the hunger strike thing--when they are not on strike, mine eat like pigs. Plus, not all of them eat/not eat at the same time, which keeps it interesting. Once you accept the fact that they will be fine, only doing what eons of genetics have told them to do to survive, they're fun to be around.

Watching them change from drab, gray little hatchlings into beautiful blue and green adults is an amazing experience! I'm excited every time I see a shed skin in the enclosure--it means a prettier occupant.

All of mine eat f/t rats, and are happy with aspen substrate, a climbing branch, a soaking bowl, and room temp. Sometimes I find them basking in the light from another enclosure next to them, but they really aren't demanding in their care. Feel free to email me with any specific questions you have. Hopefully the pic of my '04 male, Hoku, will post. It's from when he was tiny.

rgds,
althea
