Big Apple proportional thermostat?

Djinn Feb 01, 2006 03:48 AM

I'm looking at buying one of these or a Herpstat. I'm leaning towards the Big Apple because the nightime drop is built in. Do any of you folks use the Big Apple. Are you happy with it? How does it compare with the Herpstat? I guess what I'm asking is which one is better...;D

thanks

Things always get cloudy just before transformation.

I've been using the Big Apple thermostat for about a month now and it seems to work OK. It keeps a fairly constant temperature. At least within a degree, at worst. One thing to note: The instructions say not to use it with anything less than a 25 watt device. Although I tried it with a little 8 watt UTH and it worked.

I haven't tried the night drop feature.

I don't like the fact that it's not digital. You have to tinker with it to get the temperature set at the right point. But the dial is fairly accurate.

And it makes a buzzing noise. It's not too loud. You have to be within a couple feet of it to hear it.

I haven't had any experience with any other thermostats, but I'd like to hear what other people think. I think my next one will be digital.

I use it on my incubator. It works fine. For everyday use on by boa collection I use heat tape under 8 cages controlled by a Helix.

We have been using a big apple thermo for a while and the only real problem we have with it is the night time drop. It takes a while to get the temps ajusted and the slightest movement messes it all up. We have also had a problem with the fuses in it, they dont seem to last very long even when you dont have much wattage running on them. I wiuld say spend the xtra get the best, get a helix system
