Ive just fund a red bellied mud snake and i dont know what kind of a set up to put it in. I read that you put them in a set up with a couple inchs of water with no land? is that true? and what do they eat?

Mudsnakes only eat aquatic salamanders in the genus Amphiuma or Siren. So unless you have a good dependable source of sirens or amphiumas, I suggest you let it go.

Beautiful snakes, but almost impossible to keep in captivity without a constant source of those types of salamanders.

Agreeing with the previous post they are a very hard animal to keep. I have had one now or 6 months. I have a basic setup. A 10 gallon aquarium with aspen for the substrate. About half of the aquarium holds a large 3 inch deep water area. I could not get mine to eat either so I started going to some of the ponds near where I got my from and found that they will also eat leopard frogs or "spring frogs". Only problem with that is that they can transmit parasites so you have to watch out for that. also if possible get the snake to eat outside of his cage or if possible in its water dish. Make sure that you clean the water dish after each feeding to avoid contamination.
