"Underground" hide??

crestednation Feb 01, 2006 08:40 AM

Hello,
I am currently in the process of building a naturalistic enclosure for my one of my bps. I was wanting to create a sort of underground hide...I was thinking I would create some sort of a cave type thing to keep the dirt from caving in on him, having it large enough of course, and placing in a corner of his 40 gal breeder tank so I could see him from the side when he was hiding. I was just looking for everyone's opinions on whether he would even utilize such a hide, if it would still provide him enough security, and just other thoughts!
Thank you for your time,
Nicole Corder.

They live in below ground holes in nature...so it ought to work, just make sure it is safe. You have to wonder too if you can see in, will it find it to be a "hide." perhaps putting mirrored stick on window stuff on teh inside so he can't see you but you can see him...very Law and Order like.

I tried this with my ball python a few weeks ago. I wasn't sure if she would like it or not so I made a temporary setup first.

I took a small cardboard box, removed most of one of the side and replaced it with plastic wrap. Then I cut a small hole and placed a paper towel tube into it as an entrance. I opened the top, then sealed it with a small piece of tape. This simplifies the process of me trying to get her out. Lastly, I threw a small amount of bedding inside.

She is ALWAYS in there. Often she pokes her head out of the tube and peers around her cage. I wonder if she'd like to hunt food in there, throw a mouse inside and let her eat it like she would in the wild. I don't know.

Now that she loves it I'm working on a permanent setup. I'm thinking wooden box, with lanoleum inside. I'd use PVC piping for the entrance, that would allow an even more elaborate entrance, like and the box on one side of the cage and the entrance on the other. I'm just thinking out loud. Let me know what you think
