My first king...

ratsncorns Feb 01, 2006 11:51 AM

This is my first post here so just want to say hi! I live in Colorado and I have 3 other snakes, all corns. Completely new to king snakes. I picked up this guy at a show in Denver. He was labeled as a high white cali king... can you guys confirm this? Either way hes awesome! Always crusin his viv, even after I fed him 2 fuzzies.

Any suggestions for newbies? Right now I have him in a critter keeper as a temporary situation. I picked up two visionariums (same as 20L) while at the show for my corns, but I had to order the center dividers online for the cages. When those come in, hes splitting the cage with one of my 05 corns. Should I just give him his own 20L? Hes 20.6in long, and 41g. I dont want him to be in something too small.

Also, how often should I feed? Ive done research and some recommend once a week, I read somewhere that its 2x/week. I figure hes pretty similar to my corns, which are on a 6 day schedule with fuzzies.

Thanks for putting up with newbie questions Let me know what you think of this little guy!

Oh, and I paid $100 for him... does that sound right or did I get jipped? :P

Heya, I'm pretty new too =)

Anyway, I can't verify the species/genetics, but it is a very sweet King! I love the coloring (or lack of it!)

From all the shopping I did before getting my 05 Thayeri, I wouldn't think you got jipped at all, probably a pretty good price from what I remember...

Thanks for the comment! I think hes pretty sweet, very mellow. More so than most of my corns so far. Even considering a bunch of people handled him at the show and he was still very calm. I cant wait to see this guy grow!

Sometimes you can find Cal kings like yours for $50 and sometimes for over $100. You didn't get taken; it is a nice snake.. worth it.

1/2 a Visionarium is fine for now. So is a Critter Keeper. In fact, Critter Keepers make nice cages up until the snakes need more room.

One more tip.. although the dividers on Visionariums leave very little gap, make sure your cornsnake can't slip through into the kingsnake's side (and vice versa).

Its good to know that I didnt overpay for him. Even if I had gotten him online, the shipping costs can be expensive. Shows usually have pretty good deals.

As for the visionarium, I am definately going to be careful about the whole set-up. I would keep him in the critter keeper but I only have one extra UTH for the two snakes so the split cage seems like a better way to do it. My corn is big enough I think that I wont have to worry about it.

Thanks!

I paid $100 for mine. He's bigger and has a more typical pattern. Your animal is beautiful, and if he's healthy and eating well, I'd say that you made a good deal. I tend to favor giving snakes more room and giving them plenty of hiding places so that they aren't uncomfortable with the bigger cage. I'm not experienced enough to recommend that practice. I just like it. I feed my snake once a week. I've heard of others using intervals from 5 to 10 days. I'd guess that your six-day schedule for the corn snakes would be appropriate for your kingsnake as well. I congratulate you on joining the ranks of kingsnake owners. I hope you have many happy years with him.

Best hopes,

Bill

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

its unusual for a king to be calmer than a corn so early, disposition alone is worth a hundred bucks in some cases. you definetly didnt get jipped, beutiful also.
as for feeding it depends you 6 day schedule is fine you "could" feed twice a week smaller meals just to grow him quicker but some say it could shorten there lifespan growing them by power feeding which is basically feeding them anytime hell accept it but i would probaly feed him 2 smaller meals a week but thats me, the more you feed the more you clean remeber that
