Ok, we all have ONE MEAN Ball in our collection, here is mine!

EmberBall Feb 01, 2006 02:23 PM

This guy is a YB male about 500 grams. He is quite mean, and will bite, not just a bluffer and hisser. He eats well too. Do you have a mean Ball that is NOT a good eater? I would like to see some mean @$$ Ball pics.

Chances are, Sylvester was wrapped around his water dish, about 20 seconds before the pic was taken, which is why he is laying like that.

toshamc Feb 01, 2006 04:03 PM

Actually - Sylvester did father 4 clutches last year (not mine) so no he's not gravid or ovulating - he is definately a he.

I had pulled him out of his tub to clean it and he was not at all happy about being distrubed. After I put him in the smaller tub, he reared back and hissed and struck a couple of times. He stayed like that for a few minutes until I covered him up with a towel - he was fine when I moved him back into his tub. Normally he is not very freindly (balls up when you take him out) but that was the only time he got really pissy.

feed him and then start handling him after he has a full belly, snakes are pretty calm after eating and maybe he will get used to being handled. That is good advice that was posted on here before about handling aggressive snakes! Good Luck.

toshamc Feb 01, 2006 08:58 PM

The post in reference clearly states to wait a couple of days after the snake has had a meal - snakes tend to be a little less aggressive if they aren't hungry.

Do not handle your snake right after it eats.

I totally agree with tosha!

Snake vomit is the NASTIEST smell in this world!!! And that is what you will get if you decide to handle your snake within a couple days after it has eaten.

after taking a meal a ball python should not be handled because it may regurge it's meal? Wow, I am getting conflicting advice from other posts, I am glad I read here so I know what to do and what not to do with my ball pythons.

Thank You, Rene

amarilrose Feb 01, 2006 09:39 PM

I won't touch mine for a minimum of two days after eating. On the third day, I'll handle cautiously, but if anybody starts looking stressed, I put them back. I haven't had any problems with this approach.

Many years ago, I had a ratsnake vomit two or three days after eating. The cage was in the basement (though properly heated) in my parents' rather large two-story house... and I promise you, we could smell that stink on the 2nd floor! It is the foulest smell imaginable, and for the stress it causes you and your snake, it should be avoided.

...and yes, I know that not everyone will agree with me, but I would rather be overly cautious than risk causing problems.

Thanks for the advice. It helps to know when to and when not to handle a snake. Especially around feeding time.

So if I feed my snake in a seperate container (I saw where someone suggested that so that they don't get so nippy and are always expecting food when you open the cage) I should leave him in his feeding cage for at least 2 days before moving him back to his permanent home?

Mark

Contrary to popular belief they can be handled immediately after eating, carefully. Just don't take it out to play for a couple days. If you feed outside the enclosure you can put it back home afterwards.

toshamc Feb 02, 2006 11:08 AM

In all my years with balls (going on 200 BP years) I have always fed outside of the cage - I have also played with my snakes the day after feeding (no one ever told me it wasn't ok) I've handled snakes for a variety of reasons the day after they've eaten whether to clean wounds, give meds, clean tubs, etc. I've also caught my kids playing with snakes not knowing I'd fed them the day before - The only snake I have ever had regurge on me was a parasite ridden one I received last year and it wasn't handled at all. Go figure.

Do I advocate for playing with your snake on a full belly - Absolutely Not. But carefully moving it from feeding tub to cage should not cause you any concern.

I don't know the reference you make to 200 BP years. Does that mean you have one year of experience with 200 Ball pythons? Or two years of experience with 100 Ball pythons? You feed all of those snakes in seperate enclosures? That must take up a lot of time.

For each year you raise a ball you gain 1 BP year - if you raise 1 snake for 10 years you have 10 BP years, if you raise 10 snakes for 1 year you have 10 BP years, 10 snakes for 10 years you have 100 ball python years, etc. etc.

We sat down and figured mine out the other day and in March I hit 200 - Yeah me!!!! Tho thats really nothing when it comes to some of the others out there.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

This is a 2004 adult female import (I got her in a trade as a "non feeding female" weighing just over 1500 Grams, eating Gerbils only after many months of not feeding.
She strikes hard and has a long reach! (with a good hit occasionally when I don't pay the closest of attention...)

it took me about 3 months to finally hold this guy. he would always strike at me when ever i tried to move him to clean out his bin. i used a fuzzy clove and would rub it across his back before id pick him up, just to let him know i wouldnt hurt him. and hes gotten used to that. now when ever he feels my fingers on his back he acts just like the other balls that i have. he doesnt seem to mind being held which is a good thing. hes our het albino and i love holding him just picturing that one day he'll give me my first albino baby, and seriously i cant wait. i think he was just scared when i first got him. i dont blame him, i hate flying too. never have..never will.. lol i think you have to win snakes heart.

Honestly i think about 85% of my collection is nasty. They all have feeding responses and if your not quick you can get nailed easily and frequently. (its fun on cleaning and feeding day)I do have some that are very docile and sweet but not many. I tried handiling some to try and break them but that was useless with these two girls below. They will bite you everytime. I love em that way though, they always eat. lol
