PICS - January Box Turtle Eggs!

PATMAN Feb 01, 2006 03:10 PM

I knew my female box turtle had eggs in her and after keeping her in an enclosure with moist soil and a heat lamp for 2 weeks she finally laid 5 of them January 29!

Below is a picture of her a few days ago digging a test hole. It wasn't deep enough so I added a few more inches of soil.

I felt for eggs in her this afternoon and was surprised to find there was nothing there. She is a fast layer as I didn't catch her in the act of digging and laying the 5 eggs. So I dug under the heat lamp where she dug her test hole earlier and found them. I now have them in a cool whip container with moist vermiculite "cooking" in a hovabator incubator at around 80F.

I am really hoping these are fertile as she had mated with her mate numerous times. I will keep you updated. You may remember this female as I had posted pictures of her when I received in October 2005. She has a severe shell injury which fully healed long ago. I have also posted a picture of the injury.

I remember her photos from before. She's very pretty, good luck with the eggs.

You made a good choice in purchasing her.

It will be interesting to see if all of her young or a large portion of them throw RED Eyes.

Thanks for sharing...and great pics.

Thanks for selling her to me Ric. Besides her red eyes, my favorite thing about her is she eats just about anything! She always has a hearty appetite, just like you mentioned.

I 'm glad she's doing so well with you. It's nice to learn that she's in such appreciative, caring hands.
