The spiny lizards are the genus Sceloporus in the family Phrynosomatidae and includes some of the most commonly seen lizards in the United States. There are over 90 species in this genus currently organized in to 21 species groups. Most are typically colored in shades of gray or brown, with keeled scales. They are insectivorous, consuming a wide variety of spiders, beetles, and other insects, but they will sometimes also consume tender vegetation. Sceloporus are usually medium-sized species of lizard found along forest edges, rock piles, and rotting logs or stumps in the United States. They are sometimes referred to as prairie lizards, fence swift, or fence lizards. Here you may post messages or questions pertaining to all aspects and issues regarding the keeping, breeding, health, and conservation of species and subspecies of Sceloporus lizards.
