Different mosses are pretty specific about their requirements--heat, light, moisture, humidity, so it's hard to tell how long they'll last in a different environment. I don't think there's any harm in trying it out, however. I've had some odd-ball mosses and even ferns crop up on my backgrounds "spontaneously," especially on unsterilized cork bark, and these seem to do better for me than any I deliberately introduce. Sometimes even some cool mushrooms appear.
