Did I miss something or is this all purely hypothetical? It mentions 3 possible methods of intergradation between the subspecies, but it says "If intergrades exist..."

So is there any evidence that the 2 subspecies have intergraded? I don't see why they would examine potential scenarios where they intergrade if there's no evidence to suggest that they've intergraded in the first place.
