It's a northern snake. I think someone mentioned earlier in the thread that Hubbs noted in his book that the southern snakes tend to run smaller.

He has an incredible feeding response - he'll literally leap out of the cage onto the floor in pursuit of a mouse. The cool thing, once I get ahold of him, he turns into an absolute puppy dog.
