As a side note, definitions of para and polyphyly based on the inclusion or exclusion of common ancestors would not be able to distinguish between para and polyphyly the example I provided above. Maybe that was what I was thinking about when I came up with it. So again things come back to defining what you are writing about. Whew, this is a good brain workout.
