At a very popular hiking and biking trail, I noticed this rock. There's a lot of wildlife in the area, so I thought "What the hey, I'll lift that rock."

I was a bit surprised to find five snakes. Two Eastern Milks and three Eastern Garters. Every time I've checked it, there's 2 or 3 milks and 3 or 4 garters. Here's one of the milks - it is in need of a shed.

Here's another.

This is one of last year's babies. Around here they change from a grey background with maroon blotches to a tan background with brown blotches as they reach adulthood.

This one was about two feet long.

The garters are almost always in shed. But this one recently shed its skin as was rather pretty.

I really like this rock. Oh, and one more thing about the milk snakes: Did you know that they bite?
