As for the mysterious white stuff... I get that occasionally in my fire bellied newts tank. I've had no issues with her being affected by it. I would say just take a paper towel and wipe it off the top of the water. That usually does it for me for a little while. I think it might have something to do with the air running? I'm not quite sure what causes it.
