Housing a pair together?

Snakemother Feb 05, 2006 05:50 PM

Hello! I've been thinking of housing my pair of fatties together (and thinking it might wake my new boy up a bit if he's got the female in with him). Is it okay to do so? Does any of you keep pairs together?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

My understanding is that it's better to put a male with three or four females. In single pairs males have been known to breed a female to death. Or maybe it's just that he's so aggrevating that she gets stressed to death. Either way, if you are going to put one in with a male you might want to keep an eye on things.

Do you keep any of your fat tails together quig?

At the time I only own three AFT's.....2.1, and the female is still to young to breed. I did house the two males together for almost a year with no problems. Once they became sexually mature they started fighting though, and had to be seperated for the saftey of them both. What I know about housing males and females together is what I've heard and read online.

We had our male and female fat-tail housed together for several months and they seemed fine. They would sleep in the same hide etc and never fought. We seperated them before breeding season, however, in hopes of reintroducing them to intice breeding response.

hello i have a lot of african fatties and i have a lot of leos. i have housed pairs of both kinds together befor. with my fatties i did house a female and a male together and think they both got over stressed. my male stopped eating and so did my female. sense my male eats like a pig again but we are still working with my female. my leos also had the same thing happen. i housed a male and female 1 on 1 and they both got over stressed and we are working with them to improve their appetite. i had another colonie of 4 females and 1 male. the females are doing great but now my male also wont eat. we have to force feed them now. however some do fine and some dont. if you want to take the risk it is completly up to you. i was just reading your messages and you said you wanted someone with personal experience. however my females have been fine with other females and no males. now they are all seperate and some even seem depressed and some seem happy. maybe im not a good match maker lol.

I think I'll keep them separately after reading your posts. I want them healthy, and it sounds like housing them together would be more stressful, rather than snapping my male out of his funk.
I appreciate your help!
