softshell problem

beladona Feb 11, 2006 03:38 PM

My snapper is getting bigger and i know what was going to happen one day or a nother. I was getting ready to remove from my softshell and before I did the snapper bit softshells leg off!!!! There is only a small bone left. He is in extreame care because he can't die. If he does i will have to get a nother one. He was also housed with a quarter size musk turtle so i moved him to. I have the turtle vitimen that prevents common dieses and am wondering if that will help at all. They were in a fifty five gallon tank and did not think that would happen. If anyone can give me any information please tell me.

This might sound a little contenscious, but if your leg was bitten off wouldn't you go to the doctor?

a)your turtle is in pain
b)your turtle would definately benefit from assistence to deal with this major trauma.
c)your turtle is at a serious risk for infection.

Without veterinary help, your turtle will suffer, and the odds of living vs dying would be I'd say 50 : 50. Raise the odds, make your turtle comfortable, and take him to your herp vet asap.

www.arav.com is a good place to find one if you havn't yet.

You probably should not rush out and bu a second softshell until you learn to house species separate to prevent incedents such as this.
