? on venomoids

jcgranite Feb 19, 2006 10:19 AM

about 1.5 yrs ago i took over care for a venomoid black necked spitting cobra, or at least thats what i was told. never been bit i treat him like a hot snake, if there was something not done right in the surgery would it have happened by now? 2 yrs. later. besides the fact he would spit venom as a early warning sign. I dont have the education you guys do with hots and snakes in general, but i love this snake and give him a good home and would like to continue doing so unharmed, thanks..

Who did the procedure? If done properly and the glands and ducts were removed you should be at minimal risk. I would continue to treat it as a hot though even if the risk of envenomation is slim that is still an elapid and even the smallest quantity of venom could prove a horrible mess. I have freehandled snakes, but in general like to treat venomoids just as I do my hots. Regeneration should not occur but if the wrong individual messed up the procedure it isn't worth risking your life over. As far as spitting, a spitting cobra may still envenomate without spitting. In fact, I have had hot spitters that were reluctant to spit but I am sure would have knocked me for a loop should they land a fang in me.
