My parents brought me home a Tokay Gecko from petco because it was free to a good home. I keep leopard geckos (guess they diddnt know there was a difference! lol) Well i dont know much about them but he does not look good. I have found plenty of basic care sheets online. I have all the basics covered. Does anyone know where i can find some more in depth information on these guys? As soon as i get a fecal sample from him or her im taking it to the vet to check for parasites. The poor little guy/gal is very skinny. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Do not worry too much.
From the opic that tokay looks pretty healthy and in good shape. Wild tokays of that age (seems to be a yearling) are always quite thin.
Having a fecal done is always good, but that little fellow will surely make it without problems.
Welcome in teh world of tokays.

The fact that he's not latched onto your finger in that photo's kind of amazing. I own four tokays with nine on the way, and every single one of them is untouchable, save with a thick pair of leather gloves. Is he usually that friendly?

lol, actually im not holding him, my hand is actually behind the glass trying to block a glare. if you look close you can tell he is just sticking to the side of the tank. so to answer your question. he is in no way tame. i hope to tame him one day though. impossible?

i was surprised when i saw that picture, its quite an optical illusion. i have had those geckos draw blood, so be careful.
its amazing to feel thier bite compared to a similar sized gargoyle or crested gecko.

Oh man...I've got four of them, and let me tell you...when those big males clamp down, watch out. Especially when they're guarding a pair of eggs laid in a tube that you're trying very carefully to remove from their cage. Interesting about tokays...they guard their eggs, attacking anything that gets close, yet will also eat them. Little buggers...

Mistake #1 was buying a reptile from Petco

bloodroses19 Feb 27, 2006 10:29 AM

yes i know all about petco. but i diddnt buy him, my parents just brought him to me and said he was free to a good home so thought i would want him.
He seems to be doing great. eats alot! Has anyone ever tried Worm Guard? by nature zone. i got some and figured it would be easier then bringing him to the vet. he wont let me near him to take him out and i can imagine the vet trying to give him the meds!

both of my tokays are tame.. so yes it is possible.. just give it some time.. and patients.. my male is way more agressive though.. and i do have pix if you are interested in seeing them of me holding them .. just pm me .. they arent uploaded... but yea dont give the kid grief from getting an animal from a petstore.. i got all mine for petsmart and they are all in 100% health

I bought my tokay from a petstore BECAUSE it looked in bad shape. there were 4-5 in a 5 gallon all hiding in the same small log an one looked dead. the pet store geek messed with them and they slowly started moving, I said you know they are supposed to have heat, he said they do(they didn't.) so i picked one out(might have been the "dead" one) and saved it any furthur neglect. its been fine for the few years I've had it but is in no way "tame"

Tokay geckos are VERY mean. So don't handle them often. If you get bit, their jaws will lock on you, and you have to put them underwater until they cant breath and let go, then you must put them back in their cage. They are not an ideal choice for geckos.
