I met a turtle today that I am unsure of its species. It looks like a boxie, has four back toes, one belly hinge and a speckled boxie type face. He was large, 8" or so, with a very concave belly. His shell was basic browns and well worn (although not as smooth as my 25 year old boxie). Overall shape was slightly more elongated and slightly flatter than a boxie. I'm guessing a wood turtle but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

What is the locality that you found the turtle? This would help. My guess is that it is a large male of one of the Eastern Box ssp. Often older individuals will have muted markings, that may come in the form of different shades of brown/tan. Some extra large males also exhibit a more elongated appearance. Also, Wood Turtles do not have a hinge on their plastron. Let us know a little more info, and we will help you zero in on the exact species.
