I have been looking for giant days for a while now. I'm not sur ei fthey could be house together but i would like to find a "group" of them if they can be house together. I have a mighty large tnak they would be going in. In th epicture you can see the tank in the bottom. it is a ten gallon tank to give you an idea of the size of the tank. Could you please please tell me where you got them

Nice, Nevin.

Those are really nice looking! The standings are awesome and I hope they breed for you.

Good luck with them and be sure to post any questions you might have.

Hi,

From the pics I am almost 100% sure, you have got two juvenile female grandis...

"From the pics I am almost 100% sure, you have got two juvenile female grandis..."

I would love to know what makes you so sure they are female. Do you have any experience keeping/breeding grandis?

I have been breeding them for years now and I could no better guess the sex of those animals than I could a coin toss - at least just by looking at the pics.

What is it about them that looks female?

im new to these guys, but im quite sure you cant tell the sex just but looking at the tops of them. you need to flip them over, right(sarcasm). any way, the male has a very large set of .....poors at the young age that he is. and yes they are only juvies. only about 6.5".

Of course I may be wrong. But I am breeding grandis since 1984 and in most cases my sexing by looking at the head proportions of semiadults turned out to be correct.
Of course you need quite some years to be sure and from a Pic its less easy than from seeing the real animal, but still, I am quite sure in this case.

I have never heard this before, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. I will definately be looking for these subtle differences you speak of in my juvies as they mature.

xNeViNx Mar 16, 2006 09:25 PM

both animals are at an angle in the pics. maybe if the pic was from right above the animals, but its not. if you say it can be done, and youve been doing it since 84, then i dont doubt you. but i had 3 diff ppl, all ppl that breed grandis, sex them for me. they are 1.1.

As I said..I may be worng. After all its all from a look at a single pic of each animal.

Anyhow, the future will tell.
I keep my fingers crossed that I was wrong

At the moment I have 8 adult grandis. Most of them were produced by me and so i have pics of them throughout their various stages of development. Im sure I could go home and dig up many pics of them before they fully matured. Obviously i know the sex of each animal now, but you don't. So if i showed you pics of them at say 6 months of age or so, do you think you guess their sex the majority of the time?? I would definately be willing to put this together if you are willing to participate.

What do you think? Its a solid chance to prove your claims.

let me know.

OK, lets try. I have nothing to loose or to win.

After all, iths thrilling. I know it works quite well for my grandis strain and a real life look.
Lets challenge the method for a foreign strain just presented by pics.

Ok, I posted a response several days ago but it was removed for some unknown reason.

Anyhow, what I tried to say was:

Give me couple of days to dig up my archived photos (buried in a pile of CDs) and put this together.

- Just so you know... This is not a challenge. Well, yes it is, but I'm in no way trying to prove you can't do as you claim, its just that Im a skeptic by nature and I have to see this to believe it. Honestly, I hope you CAN judge the sex - then maybe you can explain to me how you do it Either way, its an interesting notion. It should be said now that, this little experiment cant really prove you wrong or right. You would have to do this many hundreds of times in a controlled setting to truely determine if you are able to predict better than mere chance. This is more for fun's sake. Basically, if you guess the majority correct, I'll be impressed. If not, well, maybe pics aren't sufficient and you need to see the animals in person - who knows?

WHile I do have my doubts, you have peaked my interest, and i just hope you don't see this challenge as a personal attack.

I will post the pics soon, maybe this weekend.

Take care,

Joe

All I can say is that I do not drive a commercial breeding facility but that I have produced a few hundred grandis in the last 22 years.
Sexing of subadults as you all know, is a challenge, since a significant number of males does develop predicitve pore sizes later than the averadge and thus are often misidentified as females.
After a few years, I had the impression that other dimorphisms are more reliable than pore size if the animal is younger than 6-9 months.
From the feedback I got, I´d say I am like 85% right if the animals are older than 2-3 months.
So for my strain of grandis this works pretty well. But as grandis blodlines may diffe rin many an aspect, I am curious to see how it works across the atlantic ocean

Im having trouble finding many pics from when these guys were younger. I managed to find pics of 4 animals that I still own and are mature. Each pic is of a different animal. Its not much of a test considering there's only 4 (hundreds would be far better) but Im very curious to see how you do. I realize the pics could be much better sorry for that.

Go for it.

PS - where (what country) do you live?

This one should be a male

Ingo Mar 28, 2006 12:10 AM

Hi,

perspective is not optimal. Best would b a full dorsal shot. Before I do say sth definite: How many animals are depicted with these three pics?

Ci@o

Ingo

P.S.:: I am from germany

jfarah Apr 04, 2006 05:45 PM

Well,
I fully understand that the pics suck. I didn't own a digital camera when these guys (the 1st generation) were young. Also, I have gotten a new computer since and I can't find a lot of my pics from that time period.

However, I don't understand why you need a full dorsal shot of these animals if your technique involves looking at the animal's head:

"But I am breeding grandis since 1984 and in most cases my sexing by looking at the head proportions of semiadults turned out to be correct."

The last pic in the lineup of 3 ought to be sufficient...

Also, the one animal that you did guess on, #4 is actually a female, not a male.

Perhaps you could post some pics of your animals and show us what you're talking about.

Anyhow, Thanks for being a good sport!

Take care,

Joe Farah

Ingo Apr 05, 2006 12:57 AM

OK,

If you want it that way:

Its how the eyes do line inline with the side of the head and how the head proportions do fit to the body.
So I do give another guess for the three: Female, female, male.
I am really surprised that the animal on pic for is female.
But if it is...obviously my method does not work well or at all on such pics.
You see...all just hot air and I am just another idiot...
Again, all I can say is that it works for me at home and that the new owners rarely come back to exchange an animal because of wrong sexing.

Ci@o

Ingo

jfarah Apr 05, 2006 02:57 PM

All 4 animals pictured are females. I still have them and they are all laying eggs. You guessed 2 females and 2 males. So you were right 50% of the time which is what you would expect from random chance.

If it works for your animals, great. But to say "I am almost 100% sure you have 2 female juvenile grandis" - just by looking at a picture is pretty bold.

Take care,

...Ok ok...but these two pics were pretty indicative. Just wait and see.

Sorry for the trouble
