humidity in a cage

snoskier Mar 05, 2006 07:35 AM

i just bought a humidifier and put it in the cage last night and when i got up it read 54%, i am going to put an anole in it, i don't know if this is enough humidity for it, also when i turn on my lights in the tank (basking, indecendent) the humidty goes down. can someone tell me how to keep the humidity up and if 54% is ok for an anole

You have a humidifyer in your Anoles enclosure? I'm not sure thats the best idea. I mist my enclosure a few times a day. The humidity in there is closer to 80%. Once every week or 2 I will let it dry out compleatly to try and not promote mold growth. so far after about a year all my Anoles are doing well with this setup

Also your humidity is droping wehn the light is on because the intence heat from the light is drying out the air in the enclosure much the way the sun dryes up the ground.

it is outside of the cage with a tube going in to the cage and then there are little holes thath let the air come out, also how do i keep the humidity up with the lights on

In my opinion you dont need it at all. Go to your local dollar store and pick up a spreay bottle. Just mist the cage a few times a day and thats it. Thats all I do and all my Anoles apear happy and healthy

Depending on who you ask, humidity is supposed to range from 60% to 80%. I've never had success with just misting in keeping humidity up. Can you cover part of the top of the cage with glass or acrylic sheets? I took apart old picture frames for the glass and taped the edges. The humidity will raise at night automatically since the lights are off - I wouldn't run the humidifier at night for that reason, but maybe others have different experience with that.

I've never used humidity values in the 60-80% range. That is too high and generally leads to mold in the substrate. Green Anoles come from temperate climates (extreme S.E. Virginia south and west to Eastern Texas and Oklahome and south to Florida). The humidity. even in the most humid part of the summer, rarely exceeds values in the mid-50% range. I have been maintaining mine in enclosures with the humidity in the 40-55% range for many years without any problems.
