Breeding Pipa Pipa - several questions

AncientDNA Mar 05, 2006 09:33 AM

The two surinam toads I have apparently mated. The male has been clutching the female for the last 4 days now & this morning there are eggs on the females back.
What I need to know is:
What is the probability that they are fertile?
What temp should I keep the tank at?
I have a 90 gallon tank with several carnivorous fish; should I set up a new tank for the female only?
This was a very unplanned pregnancy...can someone point me to a few good Pipa websites?
Thanks,
-JC

That is absolutely fabulous! Can you post some pics of your setup as a whole. Accident or not, you're doing something right. Can I borrow your male j/k,

If the mating ritual was relatively undisturbed, the eggs are likely furtile. Because they live on the mother's back (they do actually get oxygenated from capillaries in her tissue, I'm unsure if there is nutrient transfer) if fertile, they will also likely hatch. Of the few recorded breedings in captivity, they did mention that fish have been known to eat the eggs off the mother's back. I'd move the fish to another tank, but it's your call on what you prioritize. The babies are more at risk if you move the frog.

Good luck with the pipa, and please send pics of the development and froglets. Where abouts are you? I'd love first dibs on some captive bred pipa!

I have bred Pipa pipa.I can tell you these things....

Do not disturb the female for a few days as she will throw eggs off of her back.Do not feed her for a few days, until the eggs have embedded in her back.Any eggs that fall out are no good.
The female will not eat the babies when they leave the back,in my experience. The babies are tricky to feed. They eat only the smallest food, and only live prey items.Black worms and Daphnia work best.Mine would regurge even cut up red wigglers.I found them best kept seperate also.I would recomend the female be kept alone or the others may eat the babies when they come out.I keep them seperate in a sweater box until they are done with the spawn.Beware what you read about on the web and in books.I found most of it not to be correct and the people who wrote a lot of the most highly regarded info never successfully spawned pipa.Thats why you don't see any photos of the process.I took photos and video. Here is a link to some photos(they are on the bottom left).I hope this helps and let me know if I can be of any assistance.

It's quite possibly my computer but your site didn't work well at all. Perhaps it's because it's under construction still. You do sound like a fascinating person to befriend with much of the same values as I surrounding reptiles.

Cheers, and I'll see 'round

I am not a web designer I am a herp breeder.Sometimes the site loads very slowly unless you have High-speed.We are in the process of attempting to speed it up.

Congrats on the breeding. It sounds very exciting. If your eggs are fertile, do you plan on selling the young? If so, will you keep me informed. I would love to have some Pipa. I have had African Clawed Frogs for the past 5 years and am looking to add some surinames in the future.

Good Luck
