Tokay Gecko Sexing and More (with pics)

blackshirej Mar 09, 2006 11:13 PM

Been going through the archives...I used to post here waaaaay back in the day, but after some changes moved on to some other forums. Now I'm everywhere...plus I run my own forums...so yeah...

Anyway...trying to sex my tokays. All the pics in the archives are no longer viewable...so that's why I'm posting this. I bought them as a "pair"...but I'm not so sure. I'm gonna include some pics I took toward the end of ...if they're both females, I found out a local pet store has some in stock so I may go pick one up in the next few days. Sad thing is...I work in a pet store and I may be going to a competitor to purchase a new gecko. Gah.

I wrote this caresheet the other day and was also hoping to get some feedback from other tokay keepers...if there's any changes you'd like to recommend, please do so. Ingo, I know you prefer tokays to be in enclosures that are huge...but not everyone is capable of that one (though I'm going to be building a larger custom cage for mine soon). =P

Here's some pics I just took for sexing purposes...any information on everything in this post would be greatly appreciated.

Male - Pore view (I ran my finger across the pores and they didn't feel waxy...but rather, kinda rough? That the wax secretions I'm feeling?)

Male - Headshot

Female - Pore view (When I ran my finger across her pores, they were totally smooth...not rough like the other one?)

Female - Headshot

Oh yeah...never say tokays can't be tamed down...I'll agree it's rare, but I've yet to have a tokay that hasn't calmed down to tolerate handling. I definitely won't say they enjoy it...but I'm rarely tagged these days unless there's multiple people in the room making my tokays nervous. Although I gotta nifty scar on my finger from bout a week ago when my tokay got the end of my finger while I was handfeeding him a frozen-thawed pinkie...and BOY did that hurt/bleed.

Wow...they are beauties. Tokays are probably my personal favorite gecko, I own two sexed pairs, one of which I can't stop getting eggs out of, the other, none yet, not sure why, maybe next year. Has anyone had any experience hatching tokays out? They take FOREVER.

These guys are probably favorite geckos. They are so big and beautiful compared with other species. I think mine is female because I don't see any pores when she is out climbing on the glass of the terrarium. I hope to breed her someday when I have the money to buy her nice big handsome fellow. You said you have never successfully bred Tokays? I think the key is the temp. and humidity. The humidity is important because they are from the tropic. Maybe your humidity level was too low.

Anyway, you have a lovely collection! Thanks for sharing your pictures!

I agree, about the humidity thing...the pair that I get eggs out of breed like crazy, but they didn't until I gave them a more spacious living area, and increased their humidity. Anyway, good luck,
Kevin
