Grunngg Mar 17, 2006 07:53 PM

I read a couple caresheets saying UV lighting isnt necessary for Tokays because theyre nocturnal. Is this true?

yes, it's true, no geckos need it, but an extra heat ource would be good, but it's still not necessary, do you have any pics?

Grunngg Mar 18, 2006 10:15 PM

I don't have pics yet because I just got my Tokays today. I got a floresent light anyways and I have a 75watt heat bulb. theyre still young. I have them in a 29gallon tank. I'm kinda worried. They've barely moved since theyve been in the tank. I think they were really stressed. I'm about to shut off there lights and put a sheet over the tank to give them complete darkness. hopefully that help calm them.

Can I put plastic wrap over the part of the lid that has the floresent tube? I figured that would help keep up the humidity without cutting off to much air flow.

Things seem better now. Theyre exploring the cage. I'll try feeding them tomorrow.

it sounds like your set-up is more than adaquit, have you fed them and are they eating? that is normal for anything to not move much, my grandis day gecko hid in his snake plant for three days before he started moving around. if they haven't eaten in a week i would start to worry. good luck and e-mail if you have any more questions.

yeah, geckos dont need uv but because they need such extensive heat i would use one. i would also use a full spectrum bulb at night just to keep the temperature.

JadeFox Mar 28, 2006 08:05 PM

UV light is TOTALLY unnecessary for any Gecko including Tokays. DO make certain you lightly dust crickets with Calcium powerder that has D3 added in it. Keep the tank about 85 degrees in the day; an over the top NIGHTGLO "Moonlight lamp" is excellent for this purpose, especially in the winter.

I use Bed-A-Beast for substrate because you can keep it lightly moist very easily (pouring some water in the substrate. A gentle under the tank heater helps keep the humidity up. (I use "Rheostat" that you can adjust the temps with a switch which is no different than a dimmer.)

So chunk the UV light--not necessary for Tokays.

That is very true. Being noctural they do not need uvb/uva lighting.

xNeViNx May 16, 2006 09:41 PM

im not trying to argue or anything, and im sure all of you already kno this. but day geckos DO need UV. so it cant be said, NO geckos need UV. but, yes tokays dont need UV, but it doesnt hurt eather. even if theyre only getting a lil bit, its still ganna help them a little, and if you can give it to them, then why not?
