How many Fruit Flies?

Abukuchick Mar 18, 2006 01:31 PM

How many fruit flies would a 5" female anole have to eat to be well nourished? Our male eats anything, crickets, waxworms, fruit flies, but the female only seems to like the flies. I've seen her kill a cricket or two but she doesn't eat them. I've never seen her grap a worm either. I'm asuming that eating the flies is better than eating nothing, but she is very thin. I will be ordering a waxworm culture with moths, hopefully she'll like those, and I'll be trying to track down some silkworms too. How long can she survive on these little flies?

Anoles are opportunistic feeders. They will eat as much as they can whenever food is available. Keep putting fruit flies into the enclosure one at a time until she loses interest in eating them. That will give you a baseline number for her. While a balanced diet of multiple species of prey items would be best, she can live on fruit flies almost indefinitely.
