question about underweight tokay...

illusion Mar 22, 2006 04:32 PM

hey people. long time reader, but i believe this is my first post.

i just purchased a pair of tokay geckos from an online shop. they both seem healthy, but my male is a little lethargic and seems a bit underweight/skinny. hes not SICKLY skinny, but could use some fattening up. hes about 12" from nose to the tip of his tail. the female is about 9" and is extremely alert/bitey as she should be.

my question is: is there any sort of weight gainer i could buy to supliment my male. i like my tokays a little bit chunky.

thanks for any help. a link or a product name would be great.

I have the same problem. I bought my Tokays on Saturday from a Herp show. They're both healthy and active. But they could use some more bulk. Theyre only about 7 or 8 inches long right now. Would it be safe for me to feed them each a Pinkie? Maybe a second one in a week? I wouldnt feed pinkies regularly, but I would like to know they had a really fillying meal or two in them. Think I can do that? Thanks.

Hi,

the most important thing is to have a fecal done and treat the animals accordingly. Most wc tokays are loaded with Coccidia and also often with Hexamita and Oxyura.

Upon the stress of transportation, Pet shop live etc, their parasites almost always have run out of balance and have become live threatening.
So treatment is almost obligatory.

In Parallel do feed about a pinky a week -if they take ist and add Butterworms, Roaches , Waxworms and Superworms to their diet. All these are good stuff to quickly fatten them up.

Good luck

much thanks. for some reason, pinkies never crossed my mind, good call. i know most wc reptiles (and lets face it, there isnt a huge demand for CB'ing of Tokays) should have a fecal done and i hope to do it soon. thanks for the input.
