black eyed red ear slider??

naturejd Mar 31, 2006 05:08 PM

I recently bought 200 baby red ears. The other day I noticed that one of them has completely black eyes. The other 199 all have gold eyes. Every picture I see of RES, their eyes are always gold. The little black eyed guy's shell is a little bit darker than the rest and his red stripes are not as bright. Has anyone ever heard of a RES with black eyes???? Do you think this is a rare occurence?

It is pretty common to see male red ears with dark coloration. However usually its not as noticable until adult years. They are known as melanistic males. Are you able to post a pic? If you look back in this forum you will see a few other melanstic examples as this is commonly asked.

Hope thats sheds some light

Brandon
