Incubation and Substrate for Laticauda

Hokaiye Apr 03, 2006 06:14 PM

My pair arrives tomorrow morning!! I can't wait. I've got the tank all set up with lots of Sanseveria, philodendron, and pothos. It looks good to me, the only thing I'm worried about, is if I DO get eggs, how to incubate. I want to try "homemaking" and incubator and I found this method http://www.geocities.com/geckoman93/incubatorf.html but I want to make sure it will be able to regulate temp well enough. I just need SOMEONE to tell me its probably going to work out alright. Also, they recommend Perlite rather than Vermiculite - which is better, and if I DID choose perlite, is it okay (safe)? thanks for the help Ive gotten from everyone in various forums.

Molly,

As far as the incubator goes, I couldn't tell you if it would work. I got a Hovabator and it worked great. I used Perlite to incubate and had no problems, all of my five eggs that were incubated hatched and all five babies are over 18 months now.

Ah! I'm so excited, I can hardly wait. Only like... 18 hours to go.... :-D. Thanks - I'll run out and get some Perlite this weekend. How long was it after you got them before you had eggs? Oh yeah, and about how big were the hatchlings at first?

Thanks,
Molly

it took over a year before i had viable eggs. my female had problems laying. she would drop the eggs on the substrate and break them. i made her a nesting box and she's laid several perfect eggs since.

my standings hatchlings were about 3 1/4 inches long. they are the larger day gecko species. i would think your hatchlings would be much smaller.
