Any female tail photos?

PHRatz Apr 10, 2006 09:22 AM

After all this back & forth on what male mud tails look like.. I wonder does anyone have photos of female tails that they can post on the board?

I know you are looking for female tails (I'm working on that one now) but here is a typical tail for an adult male Kino.
This is a wild adult male Kinosternon scorpioides seriei photographed in Paraguay.
You can see that the tail is long enough to be curled sideways.

Cool thanks! That's a handsome fellow there, even if he does feel indignant about being on his back.
All photos are worthy of seeing.

Yesterday evening as I put one of my female boxies to bed I was looking at her thin little tiny tail which is soooo different from a male's and is very skinny compared to Scooter the mud's tail it dawned on me that I've yet to see a female mud tail. Without anything to compare to Scooter, it is easy to get confused.
If I were used to seeing a lot of muds the way I am used to seeing a lot of box turtles it'd be easy to sex them.
I got to thinking about when I meet people who can't tell the diff between a male and female box, it has to be because they don't look at them very often.
They're surprised to see how different the tails are when that is pointed out to them by showing them live male and female side by side. When you do that they never forget it.
