Satanic Infertile Eggs

tersiphone Apr 17, 2006 08:25 PM

Hello,

I have a 1.2 group of phantasticus. The male has been with the females full time for the past 5 months or so and since then each of the two females has laid 3 clutches of slugs. The eggs come out essentially without a shell (though hardened), they are a yellow, yolky color (sometimes with little pearls of white that almost look like they could have been the beginnings of a shell) and when I remove them from the cage the point of contact with the branch or leaf is not hardened and the slug inside will start to leak out. Sometimes the eggs are even defecated out and I find them with a pile of poo.

Anyone experienced this before? Any suggestions as to how I can get them "fertile"? I think the male may be a problem and I am about to introduce another male to make a 2.2 group. I do dust their crickets with vitamin supplements and calcium, so hopefully that isn't the issue.

HELP!!!

Thanks,

Matt

first off, you shouldnt EXPECT fertile eggs in the first year. usually, by the time the 2nd breeding season has come around you'll start to have better luck. it just takes satanics a while to really settle in. 2nd of all, try UV light if you arent already. also try to set your light cycle to 12/12 or 13/11 or so. adding another male may help out, but it could also cause troubles.

try reading my caresheet if you havent already.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the tips. I do actually have a UV bulb on the cage and the light is set to 12.5/11.5 cycle.

The cage is a weird 45gallon tall... so I think there is plenty of room for another male, though I am definitely going to keep my eye on them the first few days. I figured a second male might spur on some competition... we will see I guess. Do you have any 2.2 groups?

Really I just wanted to make sure what was happening was at least normal. i am not rushed to get eggs, just curious what was up!

as far as adults go, i have a 3.3 group, a 1.1 pair, and a few extra males.
