African Mud Turtle Won't Eat!

Paradon Apr 28, 2006 12:55 PM

I've been feeding my African mud turtle snails 7 days straight since I got it. I thought it might be hungry being at Petco! So after 7 days I didn't feed it for at least 3 days, and then I started to give some snails again; however, he wasn't as enthusiastic about eating as he once was...I'm not sure why! But he did eat a little! My reds, his cage made, however still takes food pretty enthusiastically. Can anyone tell me why he slows down? Could the temp be too hot?

Has he been eating the snails with the shell & all? It's possible the snail shells could've caused an impaction in his gut.
They need a variety of foods, not just one item. Try some feeder fish. Worms, crickets, maybe a little bit of a pellet food.
What's the water temperature?

No, I've smash the shells and peeled it off the snails before giving it to them. I think the water is about 80 degree more or less. i don't think the water has gotten any cooler because it's getting warmer where I live, and he was eating just fine before that. I always see them swiming, though! I'm gonna try to get some nightcrawlers and feeder fish for them after lunch. Anyway...thanks!
