There are two large skinks found throughout the state. I think that one is Eumeces inexpectatus, the five-lined. The broad-headed (E. laticeps) gets considerably larger than the five-lined, up to a foot. The head on the male gives you no doubt where the name came from. The one you photographed is a male. In both species, the male is larger than the female, with some or a lot of red on the head.
