HELP! TOKAY QUESTIONS

mastino177 May 17, 2006 04:29 PM

I've had my tokay for about 2 years. I recently bought a new cage...it was in a 20 long...the new cage is the same length, but at least twice as high with screen doors on the sides (mostly glass though). I have a 50 watt red heat light on him 24/7...is this okay? What temp should the cage stay at. I will probably decorate the cage a little down the road. Any suggestions. I spray him down once a day...any suggestions for humity control...what humity am I shooting for. Lastly, how do you tell the sex...it only occassionally calls and from its underside, between the back legs I think it's a he. All things considered I think that he enjoys his new cage. Oh, I feed him crickets, meal worms, and the occassional pinkie or fuzzie...he loves them.

the temps should be ranging from 75-85. mine stay 76-80, and thats 24/7. so if the red light is getting it there, then thats good. the humedity stays between 50-60%, topping out at 70 at any given time. give him lots of branches, and green vines. you can give them PVC pipes, or small glad wear containers to hide in. males and females ussually look the same down there, the male's pores will be a slightly bit more vissable, but the main thing is the wax that comes out of the pores. if you see wax, then its a male. every case ive ever seen i had to look for "wax". the food sounds good, as long as its all gut loaded. i hope that helps

Only males make calling noises, not to be confused with a barking or huffing type noise both sexes will make when feeling threatened. I hear male mating calls usually in the early morning hours and every once in awhile at dusk. On a two year old male you should be able to make out the V line of pores on the underneath between the legs, it may appear shiny or yellowish in color due to the waxy substance they excrete. These pores are much more prominent in males than females, missing will be the bulges at the base of the tail in male Tokays as compared to males of other Gecko species.
