What could I put in a ten gallon tank?

koikitten May 19, 2006 11:06 AM

I'm up for pretty much anything easy, amphibians, maybe reptilian, I don't have any experience and I'm looking for something to start with. African Dwarf Frogs are not an option because they are not available around here, and I'm looked into Clawed Frogs, but even the Silurana needs a larger tank than a ten gallon. I have fish experience.

Preferably something that doesn't need crickets, though feeder fish (guppies) or bloodworms would be absolutely fine. Those I can get without any problems.

I have kept two types of newts, fire belly and orange bellied. I like the orange bellied better cause they arn't as shy (the gladly eat in front of you) and they are cuter (IMO). For both types a 10 gallon is perfect. have close ot half land, half water. do this by: having water with rocks sticking out of it, have an enormous water dish, or having a glass divider. any way works, you don't need a water heater or filter, but water needs to be changed like every month- they are not messy at all. i would suggest putting some snails in, they you don't have to change it as much. have a screen or glass lid- i like glass cause it keeps humidity in and it looks better. a light isn't necessary but it helps a lot if you have one. florescents are the best for newts. they eat bloodworms and brine shrimp-mine actually eat crix cause it was very messy to use other food and mine likes crix more. you might have to expiroment a little to see what your newt likes best, if possible ask to see them eat before buying one. good luck and feel free to ask more questions!
