Not Xenopus laevis?

Katrina May 25, 2006 06:48 PM

I recently took in two small male clawed frogs from a shelter, and thought they might be something other than X. laevis. They are very small males, the smallest I've ever seen for adults (13 years old!) and have FOUR claws on each hind foot - looks like there's an extra claw on the back "heel", because they have two plain toes and three clawed toes on each foot as normal, but then there's an extra claw on the back of the hind foot. Both of the frogs have it, and since they are so small, I was wondering if they might be a different species of Xenopus. Anyone have any ideas?

They're probably Silurana tropicalis (formerly Xenopus tropicalis) or Silurana epitropicalis.

Thanks. I found some pictures of S. tropicalis, and that's what they look like!

you are right, they are not x. laevis. they are a sirulana species. a cousin to x. laevis. they are tropical and like temps. around 78 F. they also like to sit on lilly pads and other floating stuff. whereas the x. laevis will not.
