new with phelsumas

anafranil May 26, 2006 05:42 PM

Suddenly a new m.grandis ended up in my collection of geckos and because of that I wasn't prepared enough.I haven't finished my studies on phelsumas yet so I would appreciate any advise.
How do you feed them?Do you let crickets loose in the terrarium? These geckos are so alert that they would grab them from anywhere I guess, but how exactly do you do it?
Also how do you provide the non inscect foods,on small plates at the bottom perhaps?
Thanks

congrats, grandis's (IMO) are the funnest type of day gecko. here are a few things you should know:
15-20 per gecko when full grown
they eat crix and babyfood
have lots of live plants and hiding spots (snake plants and broms are good for this)
mist every day because they don't drink out of dishes or anythin
dust crix with calcium/vitiman powder 3 times a week
have UVA/UVB light as well as a basking light, if you have live plants the blue bulbs don't burn them as much
just dump the crix in the tank (7-12 every day) and they will have no problem catching them on their own, no matter how much hiding spots you have in there. i wouldn't put any food in for the crix cause they are usually all gone the next day.
you have to expiroment a little, if there are leftover crix in the tank just don't feed it, if you don't see any feed a few more of the same.
if you have any more questions feel free to ask cause i have one: the first pic is it's tank when 4 in long, then it's tank now and then a more current pic:

I'm sorry but this is not true, try chameleons.

actually, no, they don't. do some reserch, phelsumas only drink if you mist them or if there is a waterfall or something. i've had mine longer than you so how would you know?

i had a 16 inch wild caught ambanja blue panther that would take turns drinking from the water bowl with thet two adult wild caught standings it was housed with. i also have a picture of a newly aquired(at the time)henkels leaftail drinking out of still water. when i used to breed mad mads, there water bowl was dry and the female was sitting in the water bowl making a sqeaking noise when i went up to the tank. im not saying that it is necessary for them to have a water bowl ,if you mist them enough they will be just fine, but my theory is that if they will drink from it then i will provide it for them.

i like your theory, it is mine as well.

when i got my first phelsuma, i was told they didn't drink from water dishes, only from the water misted onto leaves in the cage. i put a water dish in the cage anyway, just in case he was thirsty, and the water had dried from the leaves. wouldn't you know it, he drank from it. that was over 4 years ago. there is a water dish in every cage i have, and i have seen all of them use it at one time or another. i still mist 2x a day though.
