Musk turtles in Rhode Island

loneranger Jun 02, 2006 05:18 PM

Hey folks,
I'm new to this particular forum, but have been posting on kingsnake.com for a while now.

I was wondering if any of you knew a specific area in RI where I would be able to find some Common Musk Turtles? I work for a state park and we are looking to set up some tanks to show the children who go there local wildlife.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Pete

They are usually found in calm stretches of small streams walking along the bottom. You may also find them in small ponds. You may want to try dip netting in and around aquatic vegetion in shallow water for them. I've caught babies that way. This time of year the females are nesting so that may be another possibility.

Hello,

After reading your inquiry about musk turtles in Rhode Island, I joined this forum. My question is: have you had any success in finding any in the state? I live in Newport and seriously doubt whether there are any here. Only snappers, painted, spotted, red-eared sliders, and the occasiona leatherback washed ashore.

Thank you in advance. If you wish to correspond in private cavenengo@hotmail.com.
