Newly hatched rubber boa. Need help

renoballpythons Jun 05, 2006 01:09 AM

Hi,
I just got a newly hatched rubber boa, the thing is super small and I currently have a collection of ball pythons. I would like to keep this rubber boa, but it is so small I'm not sure what to feed it. Can it take a pinkie when it is first hatched? Crickets?

Just needs some feedback on what they eat. I caught this in Reno, Nevada so I do have access to local insects.

What humidity, daytime high, night time low temps work best?

Thanks,

-Ben

Ben,

First off, it would be a newly born rubber boa. Rubber boas give birth to live babies.

They can take very young pinkies (day old)

Check out www.rubberboas.com for more info!!

Good luck and keep us posted,

Chris

Yeah, sorry, newly birthed.

Ok, I went to rubberboas.com VERY HELPFUL! I got a pinky rat, super small and I left it in with it over night, and then all day the next day. I was getting frustrated because it wasn't eating it, and I decided to try braining the pinky which was hard for me emotionally to do, but I did it, and within 5-10 minutes it started eating it!

I had better luck with a smaller container so the rubber boa couldn't move too far away from the pinky. The braining thing work really well! Thanks!

Next time you'll probably want to feed the boa mice pinks. Rat pups are a generally a lot bigger, and they may be too large for the baby boa to handle.

In fact, you may want to feed him a few mouse pinkies if he accepts them, because in the wild, it's not uncommon for Rubber Boas to eat the entire litter if they stumble across the nest.
