Greek Tortoises

jono Jun 05, 2006 11:48 PM

Hi all,

I am well aware of the current state of flux among the classification of "Greek" tortoises. Does anyone happen to have a decent grasp on the most current (or at least most widely accepted) status of the Testudo graeca complex?

I have found some sources indicating that as many as 13 subspecies exsist? Any opinions on that?

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide!

The EMBL data base, considered one of the most authoritative, lists 12 subspecies for Testudo graeca.

Seems those Mediterraneans go a bit crazy with subspecies. There are 32 subspecies listed for the gecko Cyrtopodion kotschyi!!
