Question about live-bearing spiny lizard

bradtort Jun 08, 2006 08:03 AM

I have a pair of blue spiny lizards. They are at least a couple years old and captive bred.

Earlier in the year I noticed the male displaying to the female, but I saw no actual mating.

For the last couple months she has been getting rounder. And up until a few weeks ago she was even eating as much as the much larger male.

But over the ast couple weeks I have not seen her eat anything. She spends most of her time basking under the heat lamp.

Is this typical behavior prior to birth?

Sounds like an imminent birth. I haven't kept blue spinys, but I've kept Yarrows which are also livebearers. I think as the developing young take up more space, there's less room in the stomach for food, so the female takes in less food. I've noticed that egglaying species definitely also spend a lot of time basking under the lights for a week or so before laying their eggs, so that might be another sign.

Good luck on what looks to be an impending birth. Be sure to remove the babies, as the adults would consider them snack food.
