Mandarin eggs.........

RinL Jun 22, 2006 09:38 AM

This was a surprise since she had no prelay shed. i knew she was gravid but didn't expect the eggs this soon. i know that eggs are laid without prelay sheds occasionally. is this common with mandarins? this is my first clutch of mandarins.

Good looking eggs. Best of luck. Can't wait to see the hatchlings.

I had a mandarin female this year go into a shed, shed and lay periodic slugs from post shed day 1 until post shed day 10. She was never stressed. Last night, a second mandarin on post shed day 1 laid 3 slugs scattered throughout the cage (1 in water dish, 1 on substrate, and 1 in nesting box). She currently is in the nesting box...also left alone for awhile. This is the first year this has happened to me as last year I had no problems w/ clutches. I think there are more to come from the 2nd girl, however I'm not to confident they will be viable. I can't explain why they are doing this. I hope somebody can give some insight. Good luck, I hope you hatch out some of those little buggers and they aren't too much to get feeding.

take care and keep us updated

Beautiful snake and nice looking eggs. How many did she lay? Is this her first clutch?

I find it reassuring to know that other people's Asian ratsnakes lay a small number of eggs. I bred a female corn for the first time last year and she laid ten eggs as a first clutch (the same snake laid 19 this year), so although I know trinkets tend to lay smaller clutches I was surprised when my female trinket only laid four eggs as her first clutch this year. She also hasn't had a post lay shed and has carried on as though nothing happened, unlike my corn last year who was worn out and thin as a rake. I suppose it makes sense that a snake breed which lays several clutches a year rather than just one or two is not so worn down by each clutch.
