Aggressive female spotted turtles

dragoncjo Jun 22, 2006 12:17 PM

Just wondering if any of you guys have ever seen females that enjoy chasing and biting males. Here in south jersey I have witnessed this with wild spotted frequently. The females will chase males off basking spots, also in the water you will see females chasing and biting males in the water. I have never seen this in observing many turtles in the wild. Only with spotteds have I seen such aggressive behavior from females.

My wife enjoys chasing and biting me, but I'm never noticed it with any frequency in wild turtles. My wife is wild caught, so that may explain it.

No, seriously, the wild spotteds that I've had the pleasure to come across have been so shy and wary that I've never been able to observe any natural behavior. You must have a great spot, or be the sneakiest person alive. We may have to call you "Lightfoot". My experience with spotted turtles have been that the males are insanely aggressive towards other spotteds...other males, females, and hatchlings. Of course, growing up and dating in NJ, I know that the females up there are TOUGH!! They could put any male in his place

Yo the females up here are super tough. You have to be like a ceo of fortune 500 company, or have game like tommy lee to score chicks. But anyway I do have a really awesome spotted turtle spot. It is almost like my own private pond in the woods. It is about 40*30 and holds at least three pairs of spotteds, unfortunately this spot is the only spotted area I can find in this woods. I've been fortunate to observe this pond all spring and now summer. It has been really interesting to study their behavior. This particular group of spotteds is very trusting and they have gotten use to my presence. Here are some pics, the last female(last pic) is tough one she loves the chase turtles away from her lilly pads.
