can i set them loose?

thefroglady08 Jul 13, 2006 01:38 PM

I've had this eastern spadefoot toad for about a month now, and a green frog for closer to 2. I've decided I don't want to take care of them because it's too much trouble. I got them from a friend, who got them out of her yard, and I don't know what to do with them. I can't set them loose, can I? Would they die? What else can i do?

next time before you take something living, make sure you can take care of it. you could let them go, but there is always a risk that they will not adjust, i don't know, are they healthy, eating well? if so then you could let them go, make sure that your friend actually did find them outside, cause you don't want to introduce a non-native species, and check online or something if that kind of frog si native to where you live. even if you do let them go they could get eaten by another frog or a bird or something.

yeah, she found them outside. one of them she saved from her pool, and gave it to me 3 days later, and then the other she saved from her cats (she's got 14). I'm not sure if they're healthy and eating, that's why I don't want to take care of them. They're still alive, but I never see them, they stay under the dirt most of the time, and I can't tell, I'm afraid I'll kill them if I keep them. I can keep them, but I'm afraid I'll kill them.

It's not so much that I'm afraid they'll be eaten, because that happens to lots of frogs anyway, but I'm afraid that, like my bf said, they've become immune to outside bacteria and such...

I don't know what to do. I want to do the right thing, I just can't decide what that is.

i wold set them loose, if you really don't want to take care of them, set them someplace moise, but not in the water, they aren't good swimmers. it would probally be better if you let them go. tell me what you end up doing

i think the next time it rains I'll set them loose, since one likes water (hence the reason it was in the pool) and the other only comes out when it rains. Or...do you think it would be okay to take them to a pond? I should take them to the pond...

the green frog you can let loose in a pond, make sure there is lots of coverage (like cattails, grasses, duckweed...). but do not let the spadefoot in a pond, let it loose somewhere moist, maybe close to a pond, but nto directly in the water. they mostly live on land unlike the green frog. good luck and keep me updated!

yeah, i let the green frog loose about a foot from the pond and it just jumped in the water, but i took the spadefoot off a little ways... still near the pond but not quite so close...
